About The Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu - pronounced "sheed-zoo"

If you are looking for love, kisses and companionship in a lap-sized package, you are looking at the right breed. The Shih Tzu is a true companion! Their happy, out-going and affectionate manner make the Shih-Tzu a wonderful companion and great family pet.

Shih Tzu's are lively and energetic companions. Happy, hardy, and packed with character, yet amazingly low-key and satisfied assuming they get an adequate amount of attention. The gentle loyal Shih-Tzu makes friends easily and responds well to consistent loving owners. They like nothing better than to be held, stroked, petted and pampered by their owners, and are perfectly happy sitting on the couch with you for hours. Shih Tzu's are a noble breed but they are never too proud for a roll on the floor with their favorite toy.

Though an excellent family dog, Shih Tzus are not especially good with very young children. They cannot be handled roughly or awkwardly and may tend to get snappish when their patience wears thin.

Size: Average 9-16 pounds (occasionally smaller or larger)

Exercise Requirements: Due to their small size, they require limited exercise, but need a daily walk and interaction with their owner.

Coat: They need daily brushing and regular haircuts to avoid tangles. Most Shih Tzu owners prefer keeping them trimmed into a low maintenance "puppy cut". Shih Tzus do not shed and have very little to no dander, making them a great pet choice for people with allergies.
